Silicon Valley drives more EVs and hybrids than almost anywhere, yet plenty of gas cars still need a good mechanic. Here are seven San Jose shops built for both.

San Jose is the rare city where the car in the next lane is just as likely to plug in as fill up. In 2023, about 43 percent of new car registrations in Santa Clara County were zero emission vehicles, the highest share in California, and Tesla made up roughly two thirds of new EV sales in the county. That mix changes what you need from a mechanic.
Gas cars and hybrids still fill the driveways of Willow Glen, Almaden and Evergreen, and they face the same wear as anywhere else, plus a few local twists. A shop that understands hybrid batteries, smog rules and Bay Area commute miles will save you money over the life of your car. These seven fit that bill.
Every shop below operates inside San Jose city limits, keeps a live website with posted hours and spells out what it fixes. We compared each shop's own claims with independent listings where we could. These factors carried the most weight:
San Jose summers are longer and warmer than many people expect. The warm season runs from about early June to mid October, with July and August highs around 82 degrees. That heat is hard on batteries, cooling systems and A/C compressors. Winter flips the script, with most rain falling between October and mid May and February the wettest month, so wipers and tires deserve a check every fall.
Then there is the drive itself. US 101, Interstate 280, Interstate 880, Highway 87 and Highway 85 all carry heavy commute traffic, and stop-and-go miles wear brakes much faster than steady highway driving. Smog rules apply too: most gas and hybrid cars need a check every other year at renewal, cars eight model years old or newer pay an abatement fee, and EVs are exempt. Your DMV notice will say if you need a STAR station.
Electric and hybrid cars skip oil changes, or need far fewer of them, but they are not maintenance free. Tires wear faster on heavy EVs, and the instant torque that makes them fun also scrubs rubber off the tread. Cabin air filters, wiper blades and the small 12 volt battery that runs the electronics still need regular attention. Many EVs and hybrids also use liquid cooling for the main battery, and that coolant has its own service schedule.
Brakes are a different story. Regenerative braking does much of the slowing, so pads and rotors can last a long time, but that also means calipers sometimes stick or rust from lack of use. Hybrid owners should watch for falling fuel economy, a battery warning light or an engine that runs more than it used to, since those can signal a tired hybrid battery. A shop that tests individual battery modules can sometimes save you from replacing the entire pack.
Willow Glen and the neighborhoods just west of Downtown hold some of the city's most trusted independent shops. These four have long track records and clear warranties.
Family owned and operated since 1992, Alvin's Auto Center runs its Willow Glen shop at 850 Lincoln Ave. The team works on most European, Japanese and domestic cars, SUVs and light trucks.
Technicians are ASE certified, and qualified repairs carry a two year or 24,000 mile warranty. A few touches set it apart: free towing within 10 miles of the shop when scheduled and approved in advance, a pet friendly area and a kid friendly waiting space. Hours run weekdays from 8 to 5. Book through its website.
With more than 40 years serving the community, B&C Auto Center at 1850 Almaden Rd handles both foreign and domestic cars, including Acura, Audi, BMW, Honda, Lexus, Mercedes, Porsche, Toyota, VW, Ford and GM.
Its ASE certified technicians cover factory maintenance, timing belts and transmission work, and repairs come with a two year or 24,000 mile warranty. A free shuttle within five miles and 24 hour vehicle drop-off make it easy to fit service around a workday. Call (408) 457-1184.
The longest warranty on this list belongs to GIC Car Clinic, which backs its work for three years or 36,000 miles nationwide, with some restrictions. The family owned shop sits at 375 Barack Obama Blvd, near the Willow Glen neighborhood.
Its ASE certified master mechanics work on all makes, with deep experience on Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Toyota. It does not perform smog checks and sends alignments to a partner shop, so plan around that. Financing is available for bigger repairs. Call (408) 279-5510.
Hybrid owners should know Dhillon Motorsports Tire and Auto, formerly known as Smog Man San Jose. The shop at 646 Auzerais Ave has served drivers since 2004 and handles hybrid maintenance, hybrid diagnostics and full hybrid battery pack replacement in house.
It is also a STAR program smog check station, an ASE Recognized Business and a registered California repair dealer. Brakes, transmission and tires round out the service list. The shop is open Saturdays and welcomes walk-ins. Call (408) 320-0238.

Each list uses the same yardstick: certified technicians, clear written estimates, real warranties and a track record with the cars people actually drive. Pick a city and compare the shops that earned a spot.

The last three include a value-focused downtown shop, a half century fixture on Bascom Avenue and a German car specialist. Each fills a gap the others leave open.
Near Downtown at 351 Keyes St, Akin's Auto Repair brings more than 24 years of experience and a refreshingly direct approach. Instead of guessing over the phone, you text your VIN or plate and the service you need, and the shop sends back a real quote.
It is ASE certified, a certified brake inspection station and offers free brake inspections. Services include brakes, check engine diagnostics, 30,000, 60,000 and 90,000 mile services, timing belts and electrical work on a long list of Asian, domestic and German makes. Be aware that the shop does not work on hybrids, Volvo, Land Rover, diesels or cars from 1996 and older. Call (408) 885-1898.
Family owned since 1974, John's Bascom Automotive has served San Jose for more than 50 years from 1305 S. Bascom Ave. It is a California STAR certified smog station, which matters if your renewal notice demands one.
The shop handles foreign and domestic cars, diesel service, transmissions, A/C, alignment and brakes with ASE certified technicians. It is also a member of the Automotive Service Association and says it can maintain new car warranties, so you do not need the dealer for routine service. Call (408) 292-1200.
If you drive a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi or Porsche, CarBahn San Jose works on those four brands and nothing else. Part of a small multi-location group, the shop sits at 1965 Kyle Park Court.
CarBahn says its labor rates typically run 10 to 20 percent below local dealers, and repairs carry a two year, unlimited mile warranty, a big plus for long commutes. A full fleet of loaner vehicles keeps you moving while your car is in the shop. Call (408) 866-0606.
In a city with this many hybrids and German cars, matching the shop to the vehicle is half the battle. A quick self check helps before you call:
Whichever shop you choose, ask for a written estimate first, which California requires, and keep every receipt. If a chip in your windshield is spreading in the summer heat, check our auto glass shop rankings as well.
San Jose drivers face long commutes on 101 and 280, warm summers and a car market packed with hybrids and EVs. Alvin's, B&C and GIC give Willow Glen and Downtown drivers trusted family shops with solid warranties. Dhillon is the go-to for hybrid batteries and STAR smog, Akin's keeps quotes quick and honest, John's Bascom brings 50 years of local history, and CarBahn serves the German car crowd.
Find your shop now, while nothing is broken, and let them learn your car. Schedule brake and battery checks before summer and tire and wiper checks before the rains. For other cities, see our top auto repair shops by city, including our picks for San Diego mechanics.
