EVs That Shrug Off a 100 Mile Round Trip

Range anxiety fades fast when the car can go 300 miles or more. These seven EVs back it up with EPA numbers, quick charging and plugs that fit the biggest network.

Range Is Only Half of the Commute Equation

A long commute used to be the best argument against buying an electric car. Today it might be the best argument for one. The right EV turns a 50 mile drive each way into a few dollars of electricity and a car that is fully charged every morning before you finish your coffee.

The trick is buying enough range to stop thinking about it. Cold mornings, highway speeds and big wheels all eat into the number on the sticker, so a car rated for 300 miles or more gives you a real cushion. We used the official EPA range ratings to pick seven current EVs that handle a long daily round trip with miles left over.

What Actually Matters for Commuters

Range gets the headlines, but daily life with an EV depends on a few other things too. These were the factors we weighed:

  • EPA range: the official rating, listed for the specific version, since wheels and motors change the number.
  • Charging speed: how quickly the car adds miles on a fast charger when you do need a top up.
  • Plug type: a native NACS port plugs straight into Tesla Superchargers, the largest fast charging network in the country.
  • Price: where the maker lists a current starting price, we include it.

Why Wheel Size Changes Everything

Here is a detail many buyers miss. The Lucid Air Grand Touring is rated at 512 miles on 19 inch wheels, but that drops to 446 miles on 21 inch wheels, according to EPA data. The Chevrolet Equinox EV loses 12 miles going from front wheel drive to all wheel drive. If range is your priority, skip the biggest wheels and extra motors unless you truly need them.

Home Charging Does the Heavy Lifting

For most commuters, the fast charger is the backup plan, not the daily routine. A standard 120 volt household outlet adds only a few miles of range per hour, which is fine for short trips but slow for a long commute. A 240 volt Level 2 charger, the same kind of circuit a clothes dryer uses, refills most EVs overnight with room to spare.

Before you buy, have an electrician look at your panel and the distance to your parking spot, since that drives the install cost. Many utilities offer cheaper overnight rates for EV owners, which can cut charging costs even further. If you rent or park on the street, check whether your workplace or a nearby garage offers charging, because a long range EV is much easier to live with when you can plug in somewhere regularly.

Plan for Cold and Heat

Range ratings assume mild weather. Freezing temperatures slow the chemistry inside the battery and force the car to spend energy heating the cabin, so winter range can drop noticeably. Extreme heat costs some range too, as the car works to keep the battery cool. A model rated well above your round trip distance gives you a buffer on the worst days of the year.

Do the Math on Your Own Drive

Before you shop, measure your real round trip, including errands, the gym and the occasional detour. Then add a cushion of about a third for bad weather, highway speed and battery aging over time. If that number still fits comfortably inside a car's EPA rating, you will rarely need a public charger at all. A test drive on your actual commute route tells you more than any spec sheet, so ask the dealer if you can take one for a longer loop.

Seven EVs With Miles to Burn

The first four picks offer the most range on the market, from a luxury sedan that tops 500 miles to a sleek new Mercedes that undercuts many rivals on price.

1. Lucid Air Grand Touring

No EV on sale goes farther. The EPA rates the Lucid Air Grand Touring at 512 miles on 19 inch wheels, and the 2027 model carries the same rating. Lucid says it can add 200 miles in about 12 minutes on a 350 kW charger.

The 2027 Air Grand Touring starts at $114,900 before destination. One drawback for commuters: it lacks a native NACS port, and Lucid's adapter limits Tesla Supercharger speeds to about 50 kW, so plan on using other fast chargers on road trips.

2. Lucid Gravity Grand Touring

Need room for a family and a long drive? The Gravity Grand Touring SUV earns an EPA rating of 450 miles in its two row version and 437 miles with three rows.

Unlike the Air, it has a native NACS port and can charge at up to 400 kW, with about 225 kW on Tesla V3 Superchargers. The 2027 Gravity Grand Touring starts at $98,900.

3. Rivian R1S Dual Max

The R1S blends long range with real off-road ability. The EPA rates the 2026 Dual Max at 410 miles on 22 inch wheels and 380 miles on 20 inch wheels. For 2027 the version is renamed Premium Long Range and keeps the 410 mile rating.

Edmunds lists the 2026 model at $90,990 plus a $1,895 destination fee. A native NACS port comes standard on 2026 models, so Supercharger access is simple.

4. Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ with EQ Technology

The new electric CLA is the value surprise of this list. The EPA rates it at up to 374 miles depending on the version, and it peaks at 320 kW on a fast charger, going from 10 to 80 percent in about 22 minutes.

It has a native NACS port, and the 2027 model starts at $47,950. That is a lot of range and luxury for the money.

Squeezing More Miles From Any EV

The last three keep prices more reachable while still clearing 300 miles. Two come from Tesla, and one is the best range value under $40,000.

5. Tesla Model 3 Premium RWD

The Model 3 remains the efficiency benchmark. The EPA rates the 2026 Premium rear wheel drive version at 363 miles, and of course it plugs right into the Supercharger network. Tesla adjusts prices often, so check its site for the current figure before you shop.

6. Tesla Model Y Premium RWD

If you want an SUV with a big cargo area, the Model Y delivers. The EPA lists the 2026 Long Range RWD at 357 miles. Like the Model 3, it uses the native Tesla plug and gets full access to Superchargers. Pricing changes regularly, so confirm the current number with Tesla.

7. Chevrolet Equinox EV FWD

The Equinox EV proves long range does not have to cost a fortune. The EPA rates the front wheel drive version at 319 miles, while all wheel drive comes in at 307.

Chevy says it can add about 80 miles in 10 minutes on a fast charger, and the 2027 model gets a native NACS port. The 2027 Equinox EV LT1 starts at $34,995.

Also Worth a Test Drive

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 with rear wheel drive is rated at 318 miles by the EPA. The 2027 model starts at $35,250 before freight, has a native NACS port and charges from 10 to 80 percent in about 20 minutes on a 350 kW charger.

Habits That Stretch Every Charge

Even the best EV can come up short if you drive it the wrong way. A few small habits make a big difference on long commutes.

  • Precondition while plugged in: warming or cooling the cabin from the wall saves battery for the drive.
  • Charge at home overnight: a Level 2 charger means you start every day full.
  • Watch your speed: range drops quickly above 70 mph.
  • Keep tires inflated: low pressure adds drag and cuts miles.
  • Compare charging claims carefully: some makers quote minutes to add 200 miles while others quote 10 to 80 percent, so the numbers do not line up directly.

One more cost to know about: EVs tend to lose value faster than gas cars, so leasing can make sense if you like to switch often. Our resale value rankings explain why.

Plug In and Forget the Gas Station

The right EV makes a long commute easier, cheaper and quieter. The Lucid Air leads on pure range, the Lucid Gravity and Rivian R1S bring that range to big SUVs, and the Mercedes CLA offers a near 375 mile rating for under $50,000. Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y keep things simple with seamless Supercharger access, and the Chevrolet Equinox EV gives budget buyers more than 300 miles.

Pick the range that fits your round trip plus a healthy buffer, skip the oversized wheels and set up home charging if you can. When it is time for service, our top auto repair shops include several that work on hybrids and EVs. For more rankings, browse all of our Hot Lists.
